Squier by Fender John 5 Telecaster, Black

Product Description

John 5 is a self-described “Fender® fanatic” with a jaw-dropping collection of his favorite instrument, the Telecaster® (“the greatest guitars ever built, by far,” in his words). His Squier signature model, the J5 Telecaster, is a double-bound beauty based on his oft-modded workhorse Telecaster, which was pieced together at the Fender Custom Shop. Features include John 5’s distinctive black-and- chrome look—a double-bound alder body with a gloss black polyester finish, a polished stainless steel pickguard and chrome hardware. The one-piece maple neck has a modern C shape, a matching black Telecaster headstock and a 12”-radius rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium jumbo frets. The custom-designed humbucking pickups use a special dual-volume setup with the bridge pickup control in the front position and the neck pickup control in the back position (5 prefers this setup because he spends much time giving the bridge pickup a workout). Rapid toggling the upper-bout three-way pickup switch gives you 5’s signature “kill” effect by turning off the neck pickup volume and leaving the bridge control full up.

  • Alder body with gloss polyester finish
  • Modern C-shape maple neck with 12 in radius, rosewood fingerboard and 22 medium jumbo frets
  • 1 Custom Humbucking Pickup with AlNiCo 5 Magnets (Neck), 1 Custom Humbucking Pickup with Ceramic Magnet (Bridge)
  • 6-Saddle Tele® Bridge with Humbucking Pickup Cutout
  • 2 volume controls and a 3 position toggle switch

5.0 out of 5 stars This things a monster!!!!!, October 21, 2010
This review is from: Squier by Fender John 5 Telecaster, Black (Electronics)
I bought the J5 Squier Telecaster with really low expectations, not to be picking on Squier by any means, but I wasn't expecting what I got. This guitar flat-out rocks!!!! I opened it up expecting it to need a full setup but I was pleasantly surprised - it didn't - it was barely out of tune and when I plugged it in and slammed a power chord.........my hair blew back!!! I have several guitars and since I have had the J5 Squier, I find myself reaching for it more often than not and I'm a Strat guy for the most part. Squier and John 5 really have done a fantastic job here and for the price, this is just a steal. The only dig I can find is that there's no tone control, both knobs are volume and they are basically either off or on, not much control but that can be changed. I just plain love this guitar and can't praise its virtues enough. If you're looking for an inexpensive guitar with huge tone, then what are you waiting for? Order the Squier John 5 Telecaster right now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Tone but Needs Some Work, December 20, 2011

This review is from: Squier by Fender John 5 Telecaster, Black (Electronics)
Let me start by saying I am by no means a guitar expert but I was in the market for a new guitar to practice with. I am more of a casual guitarist and not so much the type to see others and laugh at their doo doo playing or someones attempt at it. I don't really claim to be great nor do I play in a band. I usually just play songs with my kids and throw a good metal sound in the middle of it. Being thirty years old is kind of late to start learning guitar but you can really learn to play anytime. Its just if I were younger there would be so much free time to get good. So don't take this review as definitive or critical but merely my experience as a somewhat newer player (little less than a year or so). I know judging from what some people might think since I'm new I should have it setup by one of those musician magician stores. I really am not that serious to that point to take it somewhere and have to pay for fixing it. I enjoy playing by myself and thats really all I can see... Read more

I also had never heard of "John 5" until I came across this, but it seemed very close to what I was looking for (Tele w/Humbucking PUs, rosewood fingerboard, etc.) so I went for it. John is a GREAT player and seems like a great guy, but Fender QC seems to be dropping the ball on delivering this low-end sig model. At this price point I expected it to at least be manufactured properly, but mine showed up with very notably rippled/uneven finish (front *and* back), plus the neck PU mount holes were positioned improperly, forcing the PU to sit jammed at a sharp angle and limiting adjustability to almost nil. Sent it right back (thanks Amazon!), forked over the extra $ for a Blacktop Tele, very glad I did.
